The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center, established in 1983, began as a humble sanctuary for wild animals featured in documentary films about the tropical rainforest. What started as a small backyard zoo quickly evolved into something far greater when it became clear that Belizeans were largely unfamiliar with the incredible wildlife that roams their own country. This realization sparked a powerful commitment to transform the zoo into a dynamic educational center dedicated to wildlife conservation and awareness.
 

Today, the Belize Zoo sprawls across 29 lush acres of tropical savanna, home to over 150 animals representing more than 45 species—each one native to Belize. The zoo houses a variety of creatures, including orphaned animals, rescues, and those rehabilitated after injury, alongside animals born at the zoo or sent by other zoological institutions. It’s a place where you can not only see these majestic animals up close but also learn about the vital role they play in Belize’s ecosystems.
